Exemption of Visas

Visa Application
Short-term Visas are for stays up to 90 days.
If your country is not listed in the Exemption of Visas, then it is neccessary to apply for a visa before entering the country.
※ Visa applications should be made at the Embassy of Japan or consulate with the jurisdiction over applicant's place of permanent residence or long term residence. You may apply for a visa at this Embassy if you live, work or study legally within the territory of the Czech Republic.

In the table below, please find the requirements for each of three fundamental visa types of Single-Entry Visa based on the purpose of visit.

Multiple-Entry Visa
For countries specified in the table above, the following documents must be submitted in addition to those required for a Single-Entry Visa:
- Multiple-Entry Visa Application (see Forms to download down below)
- Certificate of Employment (type of contract, salary amount)
- Bank Account Statements for the last 6 months
- Previous visa to Japan (if applicable)

Long-Term Stays
If you do not meet the requirements for short-term stay, such as in cases where you intend to work in Japan for remuneration or stay in Japan for more than 90 days, you should, in principle, obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the Immigration Services Agency of Japan before applying for a visa at the Diplomatic Mission of Japan with jurisdiction over your place of residence.
Once you have received the Certificate of Eligibility you will need to submit the following documents for the visa application:
- Passport
- 45mm x 35mm passport-type photo taken within the previous six months
- Official Visa Application Form (see Forms to download down below)
- CIS countries, Ukraine, Georgia and Russia must have the Application Form and photo two times each.

- Visa application proccessing period is 1 week (5 business days).
- Express issuance of the visa is not possible.
- Please note that once your visa has been issued, you have three months to enter Japan, otherwise your visa will expire. CoE holders must have both a valid visa sticker and a valid CoE at the time of entry.
- The permitted period of stay is calculated from the day after entry into Japan.
- Japan has no regulations regarding passport validity. Your passport must be valid until the date of your departure from Japan (especially in the case of a short-term stay).
- Visa application is to be submitted during the office hours of Consular and Visa Section. No prior reservation is possible nor needed.
- Please do NOT hole punch, staple, paper clip, binder clip, or otherwise attach documents to one another.
- All visa application forms should either be printed or typed with no column left blank.
- Additional documents may be required if necessary.
- Visa Application Form and Travel Itinerary must be filled out in English or Japanese. Bank Account Statements can be submitted in Czech verison.
- If the required application documents are not in English, it is advised to attach English translation to them. English translations do not have to be official translations, they can be translated by the applicant.
- Please note that you are not required to pay for the air ticket and the hotel in advance, as the Embassy of Japan cannot refund the costs in case your visa is not granted or is delayed. However, you must have their reservation.
- Japan does not have any regulations relating to passport validity, as long as your passport is valid until the time you leave Japan (especially in case of short-term stay).
- Acceptance of the application does not necessarily mean that the visa will be granted.
- In case the visa is not granted, the reasons will not be disclosed due to internal rules of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
- In general, the visa is only valid for one entry. The visa sticker itself is valid for three months from the date of issue, therefore applications are accepted three months prior to the intended date of arrival. The validity period of the visa sticker cannot be extended.
- A visa is only a recommendation for the entry to Japan. Possession of a visa does not necessarily entitle the bearer to enter Japan. The person may not be permitted to enter upon arrival at port of entry if he or she is found inadmissible, even in the possession of a valid visa.
